About

ARTIS is an old city zoo that grew into a park — nineteenth-century animal houses, mature trees, an aquarium building, a butterfly pavilion and enough winding paths that most visits run three hours without trying. It sits in the Plantage, ten minutes east of Waterlooplein, and the pace is set by walking rather than queueing.

It’s a strong thing to do after a session precisely because it asks nothing of you: no narrative to follow, no timed entry beyond the gate, just a lot to look at and plenty of grass to stop on. The aquarium’s dim tanks and the greenhouse humidity are the parts people remember. Smoke beforehand — not inside. The whole park and its museums are smoke-free, cannabis included.

Better after a smoke

Treat this as a post-smoke experience, not a place to light up.

ARTIS-Park and its museums have been entirely smoke-free since 2019: smoking, vaping and cannabis smoking are not permitted. Visitor regulations also prohibit bringing narcotics onto the site.
