Brand story

Five venues, one Amsterdam institution

Green House is one of the names that helped turn Amsterdam coffeeshop culture into something recognised far beyond the city. The wider story reaches back to 1985, while the first official Green House coffeeshop opened on Tolstraat in 1992. That original shop is now Green House Pijp, and the Amsterdam family has grown into five distinct venues rather than one repeated format.

Today the group spans Green House Pijp, Green House Centrum, Green House United, Green House Namaste and Strain Hunters Coffeeshop. Each has a different role: Pijp carries the original neighbourhood identity, Centrum is the high-profile canal-side stop, United is the place to settle in with food and the Cookies Lounge, Namaste is the compact Waterlooplein option, and Strain Hunters keeps its own exploration-led identity on the Singel.

What makes Green House worth understanding as a brand is the range inside that family. The name is tied to breeding, competitions, Strain Hunters and a wider international cannabis business, but the Amsterdam coffeeshops are still the clearest way to see how that history translates on the ground. Once you understand the differences between the locations, there is usually one that fits naturally into the part of the city you are already exploring.

Good to know

Read the family, then choose the room

01

More than one flagship

Green House works best as a family of venues with distinct personalities, not as a row of interchangeable branches.

02

Cultural reach

Archive imagery, collaborations and long-running recognition show how the name has travelled across music, lifestyle and cannabis culture.

03

Start with the right branch

Choose by mood: a neighbourhood hang, central convenience, a food-led stop, a compact Waterlooplein visit or a more exploration-led setting.

  • More room to relax. Pijp is the calmer Green House option. It sits away from the busiest central tourist streets and has more of a neighbourhood pace, making it better suited to a proper sit-down than a quick city-centre stop.

Red Light District · Oudezijds Voorburgwal 191

The high-profile Green House branch in the Red Light District, set inside a 17th-century canal house with one of the group's best-known Amsterdam addresses.

  • Tourist-heavy by location. Its Red Light District position keeps it busy. If you want a calmer Green House experience, Pijp is the better fit.

Haarlemmerbuurt · Haarlemmerstraat 64

The most full-service Green House location, combining three seating areas, a proper food menu and the official Cookies Lounge on Haarlemmerstraat.

  • Cookies Lounge is inside. The official Cookies Lounge Amsterdam sits inside Green House United, so treat it as part of the same venue rather than a separate coffeeshop stop.
  • Food is part of the experience. United has a full kitchen and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, making it the strongest Green House option when you want to eat and stay for a while.

Which location?

Choose by neighbourhood and pace

Green House Pijp

Green House Pijp is where the Amsterdam coffeeshop story properly starts. The Tolstraat shop opened in 1992 as the first official Green House coffeeshop, and it was this location that entered the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1993 and took first prize.

Green House Centrum

Green House Centrum is the branch most people picture when they think of the Green House name in central Amsterdam. It sits on Oudezijds Voorburgwal in the Red Light District, inside a 17th-century canal house, with canal-side seating and a location that keeps it firmly in the middle of the city's busiest visitor flow.

Green House United

Green House United is the branch to choose when you want to stay put. It has three separate areas to sit, a full kitchen and the official Cookies Lounge inside the same venue, so it works more like a long-form hangout than a quick coffeeshop stop.

Green House Namaste

Green House Namaste is the smallest branch in the Amsterdam group, and that compact scale is exactly what gives it its character. The polished wood, abstract details and tighter layout make it feel more intimate than United or Centrum without losing the recognisable Green House identity.

Strain Hunters Coffeeshop

Strain Hunters Coffeeshop is the newest coffeeshop in the Green House Amsterdam group, but it does not feel like another Green House branch with a different sign. The identity is more directly tied to the Strain Hunters side of the wider brand, with a smaller room, a special menu and a more exploratory feel.
